Find the Secret to Knowing God!

As we approached the ornate iron gates, I looked down the curved driveway lined with beautiful flowers and expansive manicured lawns to the entrance of a palatial mansion. Inside, many important people waited to talk with the prominent and influential owner, and others tried in vain to be given a few moments of his time. I had come because I was invited to spend the entire evening with this man and his family. Why was I given this opportunity?

My connection to this prominent person was not direct but was through my friendship with his son. Because the father was pleased with my relationship with his son, he wanted to spend time with me.

This is the same way it is with God. We are able to meet Him—the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Whose dwelling has far more splendor than any earthly mansion—because of our relationship with His Son. Jesus explained, “All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him" (Matthew 11:27). The key to knowing the Father through the Son and learning His ways is given to us in the following command:

Command Twenty-Five: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

The purpose of taking on the yoke of Christ is to "get in step" with Jesus and learn His character by spending time with Him. It is significant that Jesus describes Himself with the characteristics of meekness and lowliness of heart. The longer we are yoked with Christ, the more opportunity we will have to learn these qualities from Him. If we allow Him to develop these qualities in our lives, we will know more of God, because the Father and Son are one.

Many people have developed a wrong perception of God. They view Him as harsh and unloving because of difficulties He has allowed in their lives. However, the problem lies not with God but rather with a lack of meekness and lowliness of heart in the life of the individual. When we do things "our way," we experience the painful consequences of our actions and then have a tendency to wrongly blame God for them.

“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 16:25).

It is clear from Christ's teaching that we will be able to know the Father only through the Son. Jesus stated, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6). Thus, if we want to know God, we must first come to Jesus, accept His invitation to exchange our yoke of sin for His yoke of righteousness, and learn about Who He really is by walking close to Him. Let's purpose now to engraft this command into our hearts and learn Who God really is!
