Command 4 : Let Your Light Shine | Day 25

Do Good to All!

We are given an important instruction in Galatians 6:10: "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." How could we possibly do good to all people? There is an answer.

The leaders of cities, states, and nations are responsible to God for doing good. As we assist them with their responsibilities, we benefit those under their care.

In Scripture, government officials are described as "ministers of God for doing good" three times. They are ordained by God to punish those who do evil and praise those who do good. (See Romans 13:1-10 and I Peter 2:13-14.)

Paul writes, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (I Timothy 2:1-4).

Notice the relationship between prayer support for leaders and widespread salvation. It is the leaders of nations who can make possible the fulfillment of the Great Commission to teach "all nations... all things whatsoever I have commanded you."

Our good works should be carried out so that leaders get the credit, God gets the glory, and we have the joy of eternal rewards.

Several years ago, Dr. Kyle Guimon went to an African nation as an ambassador for Christ. He hired some men from the police department to assist him. One day their officer, who was a Christian, said to him, "My men tell me that you actually serve them, rather than having them serve you. Why do you do this?" Dr. Guimon responded, "Because that is my purpose in being here." Then he added, "How could I serve you?"

The officer thought a moment and then explained that some relatives had died and that he must adopt their child; however, he was not financially able to do this. Dr. Guimon asked if he could financially support that child. The police officer was amazed and gratefully accepted his offer. The officer then told higher officials about this unique Christian.

Soon, Dr. Guimon was working directly with the top leaders of this nation, one of whom attended a leadership conference we sponsored. Today, those leaders, who have a totally different religion, are giving Dr. Guimon land, facilities, and preferential treatment so that he can do good to a large number of people.

What good works can you do for the government leaders in your area? One way to start is by sending a personal letter thanking them for their sacrifices and the benefits they bring to your life.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
