Command 44 : Keep My Commandments | Day 304

Search for Hidden Treasures!

Most men spend money on their hobbies, but not this man. He often makes money with his favorite pastime. He collects antique roll-top desks. Some desks he finds in junk piles; others he buys at garage sales or auctions. With each new desk there is an air of excitement. He takes precise measurements of the inside compartments and studies them carefully. He then often discovers what he is looking for—a secret compartment filled with money!

Finding a secret compartment filled with money would be exciting, but how much more excited should we be to search out all the commands of Christ! They contain inexhaustible riches of wisdom and understanding, for “in whom [Christ] are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). However, to get these treasures we often must search for them, because they are not visible to the casual reader. Thus, Proverbs 2:4-5 states:

"If thou seekest her [wisdom, knowledge, and understanding] as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God."

Our spiritual "treasure map" tells us that we are searching for the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God. Why is this so valuable? Because “by humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life” (Proverbs 22:4). The fear of the Lord is also the beginning of wisdom (see Proverbs 9:10).

The fear of the Lord is a continual awareness of His presence. It is moment-by-moment fellowship with His Spirit, which prepares us to do that which pleases Him and reject all that displeases Him. It is this communion of spirit for which God longs.

By studying the commands of Christ, we can learn various aspects of how we are to fear the Lord. Here are a few examples:

Christ's Commands  How They Teach the Fear of the Lord
1. Repent    True repentance is grieving over the loss of fellowship with God, not just over the consequences of my sin.
2. Follow Me    By following Jesus, my awareness of His continual presence in my life and evaluation of all that I do will increase.
3. Rejoice    I can be thankful for adversity and persecution, because God is watching over me and will reward my suffering.
4. Let Your Light Shine    By doing good deeds for God and not for men, I can expect to receive God's reward, which is far greater.
5. Honor God's Law    It is the Law that reveals my sinful condition before a holy God so that I can repent and reverence Him.
6. Be Reconciled    By seeking reconciliation I will learn humility and better understand God's great love for me and His forgiveness.
7. Do Not Lust    Since God sees the thoughts of my heart, I commit adultery in His eyes when I indulge in secret lust.

Completing this list by going through all the commands can increase our understanding of the fear of the Lord and our knowledge of Him, which is a true and lasting treasure!

“If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
