Command 44 : Keep My Commandments | Day 306 See Christ in His Commands!I have a picture that makes a great object lesson. I will hand it to a person and ask him to tell me what it is a picture of. The person will often look at it, study it, and turn it different ways but will not be able to tell me what it is. However, when I point out the cow's head in the picture, he suddenly "sees it." The Scriptures are often the same way. We can sometimes look at them, study them, and analyze them, and yet not see the real picture. This was the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They had looked at the Scriptures and knew them well when Jesus pointed out to them the "hidden picture" that they had not previously seen. (See Luke 24:13-32.) The "hidden picture" in the commands of Christ is the Person of Jesus. When we see Him, our hearts will rejoice. Each command gives us a glimpse into the life and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The command to "Repent" teaches us that true repentance from sin is a desire to restore a broken relationship. When Jesus came into the world, His goal was not simply to recover the blessings that were lost in the Garden of Eden. Rather, His desire was to restore the broken relationship between God and man that took place when Adam and Eve sinned. (See Ephesians 2:16). The command "Follow Me" is a call for us to follow Christ, Who gave us an example of following and submitting to the will of His heavenly Father. We see this when He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, “... Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39). Jesus told His disciples, “... I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me” (John 5:30). We can also see the command to "Rejoice" when we are reviled or persecuted demonstrated in the life of Christ, “... who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame" (Hebrews 12:2). We also see His sovereignty and “... that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). In the command "Let your light shine," we see Jesus as the true light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). Jesus is revealed not only in His commands, but on every page of Scripture. The command to "Honor God's Law" reveals Christ through His actions of coming to earth not to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it. (See Matthew 5:17-18.) This also shows us an important aspect of God's nature, which is that He is unchanging. (See Malachi 3:6 and Revelation 1:8.) One of the greatest rewards for keeping Christ's commands is having Jesus reveal Himself to us. (See John 14:21.) Let's continue to look for Jesus as we study His commands, because He has promised that if we search the Scriptures, they will testify of Him. (See John 5:39.) |
