Command 48 : Receive God's Power | Day 336

Get Fresh Power Every Day!

A famous mountain climber who was praised for conquering Mount Everest once made this somber declaration: "In mountain climbing, there are no conquerors, only survivors." One of the primary necessities for surviving the treacherous and grueling ordeal of climbing up and down a mountain is having a proper supply of food and oxygen.

Some of the most touching diary entries of mountain climbers are the final words of those who are found frozen to death, describing how they were pinned down by an unexpected blizzard and consequently ran out of provisions.

In the same way that a mountain climber needs the right daily provisions to survive, we need the daily power of the Holy Spirit.

Packages of food and bottles of oxygen are life-and-death necessities for mountain climbers. In our spiritual lives, the Holy Spirit and nourishment from the Word of God are equally as necessary. Jesus stated: “... Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

Jesus gave His disciples practical insight on how to get a daily provision of God's power when He said: “If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:11-13).

Just as we can ask for and receive daily food from God, so we can ask our heavenly Father on a daily basis for the filling of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 tells us to “be filled with the Spirit." This instruction is in the present imperative tense, which denotes continuous or repeated action. Therefore, another way it could be stated is: "Keep on being filled with the Spirit."

There is the need not only to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit at salvation but also to have the power of God's Spirit transforming our souls and controlling our physical bodies on a continual basis. Only when this is true can we walk in the Spirit and have the power we need for daily victory. (See Galatians 5:16.)

Each day we can ask our heavenly Father to give us daily bread and a fresh anointing of His Holy Spirit.

Since learning this important Biblical truth, I have had the joy not only of acknowledging my complete inability to do anything for God and, therefore, asking Him for the grace and wisdom I need for the day, but also the joy of asking Him daily to fill me anew with His Holy Spirit. Each time that I do this, I have the sense of being properly equipped to face the day in God's power rather than with my own feeble efforts. I urge you to begin asking God for a fresh filling of His Spirit on a daily basis.

In this week's journal entry, let's record how we experienced more of the power of God's grace by recognizing and acknowledging our total inability to live the Christian life. Then let's record the results of daily coming to God's throne of grace and asking for His power.

“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49).
