Command 5 : Honor God's Law | Day 35
Delight in God's Law!
The promise of complete success and prosperity is not only for reading the Law of God or studying it, but includes the aspect of delighting in it.
“But his delight is in the law of the LORD ... Whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:2-3).
When I experience a need to increase my delight in God's Law, I read through Psalm 119. It lifts up the Law of God as a diamond in the brilliant light of God's wisdom, and turns it in various directions so that we can enjoy the splendor of each facet, as seen through the eyes of David:
- Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. (1)
- I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. (16)
- Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (18)
- My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times. (20)
- Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors. (24)
- Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. (35)
- I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved. (47)
- The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver. (72)
- O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day. (97)
- Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. (129)
- Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. (140)
- I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. (162)
- Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. (165)
- O Lord ... thy law is my delight. (174)
Enthusiasm is contagious. That in which we delight will be of interest to those around us.
If you want a challenging exercise on this day of journaling, take a piece of paper and put on the left-hand side the things from Psalm 119 that God expects us to do and on the right-hand side the things He will do. You may discover that you are trying to do what God promises He will do, and are expecting God to do things that are your responsibility. One of the things we are to do is to delight ourselves in Him and in His Law. Then, He promises to give us the desires of our heart. (See Psalm 37:4.)
